Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body either does not produce enough insulin (Type 1) or cannot effectively use the insulin it produces (Type 2). When you eat food it gets transported throughout your body like a super highway for nutrients. When you use energy like your heart pumping, or your muscles lifting, those organs then need to absorb those nutrients from the blood to replenish the energy your body uses, somewhere on that ride it gets stuck causing high blood sugar that can lead to diabetes.
Causes:
Type 1 diabetes can be caused by an autoimmune condition, where the immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.
Type 2 diabetes is primarily caused by lifestyle factors such as unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, obesity, and insulin resistance. Insulin resistance occurs when cells in the body do not respond properly to insulin, leading to elevated blood sugar levels. So the takis, steak, and soda can be giving you type 2 diabetes. PUT IT DOWN!
Natural Management Recommendations:
Healthy Lifestyle: Your plate should look like the rainbow. Colored with different veggies and fruits, whole grains, nuts, and seeds. Focus on low-glycemic foods that release sugar into the bloodstream slowly, helping to stabilize blood sugar levels. Limit intake of sugary foods, and unhealthy fats.
Get Moving!: workout regularly to improve insulin sensitivity, lower blood sugar levels, and maintain a healthy weight. 3x/week min should be good!
Let That Ish Go: Practice stress-reducing techniques such as meditation, deep breathing exercises, yoga, or tai chi to help lower stress hormones that can elevate blood sugar levels.
Get enough sleep: Prioritize getting enough sleep each night. Not sleeping well can disrupt hormone balance and increase insulin resistance. Aim for 6-8 hours of sleep per night. Can't sleep?
